The challenge
ACT!'s website was compromised: malware injected into the site, and Google started warning visitors that the site may be hacked. For a non-profit whose credibility with donors, partners and communities is everything, that warning was a reputation problem as much as a technical one - and nobody could risk clicking through to their program work.
What we did
- 1Isolated the compromised site and secured a clean backup point before touching anything, so nothing else could be lost.
- 2Scanned the full file tree and database, removed the malware, and found and closed the backdoor the attackers had left behind.
- 3Reset every credential - WordPress, hosting, database - and hardened the site so the same hole couldn't be reopened.
- 4Submitted the site for a Google security review and monitored Search Console until the hacked-site warning was cleared.
- 5Moved ACT! onto an ongoing maintenance package: updates, backups, security monitoring, and a direct line if anything else looks wrong.
